Gaynor shot to international fame with her song, "I Will Survive," which became an anthem for many women.
Renée Robinson and Paula Bell were among the fans in attendance Wednesday evening in the concert at Columbus Park in downtown Stamford. Both women said they have been regular attendees over the years at the popular outdoor concerts.
"You dance and you sing, and it's just like having a party," Bell said. "People will be dancing out in the streets, and it's just a nice thing."
Bell and Robinson said their favorite performers at past events were Boyz II Men, who played a couple of years ago and will return next Thursday.
Robinson said her favorite Jazz-Up July performer was four-time Grammy Award winner Roberta Flack.
"That was my favorite, everybody was just in the moment and singing," she said.
On Thursday night, Michael Franti & Spearhead opens the Alive@Five series with Jeff Tuohy also on the concert bill.
Before opening act Brittney Crush hit the stage, Stamford Downtown Special Services District President Sandy Goldstein thanked the audience members who came out despite the uncertain weather.
"I am so thankful that so many of you made it here this evening," she said.
For next week's show, Tito Puente Jr. & His Orchestra will take center stage. The admission fee is $10, children 12 and under are free.
