MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. — Fifth-graders from the Bedford Central School District’s five elementary schools are moving on up. This week, students passed from elementary school to middle school in five ceremonies held throughout the district.

On Thursday morning, each of the schools — Bedford Hills Elementary School, Bedford Village Elementary School, Mount Kisco Elementary School, Pound Ridge Elementary School and West Patent Elementary School — held a "Moving Up" ceremony to commemorate the end of the school year and the students’ graduation to sixth grade at Fox Lane Middle School.

The schools all held their graduations at 9:30 a.m., before the stifling heat peaked at 97 degrees.

At Mount Kisco Elementary School's ceremony, principal Susan Ostrofsky encouraged parents to cherish and enjoy the ceremony, but she could have been speaking about something much greater and even more poignant: childhood itself.

"This is going to go by like that," Ostrofsky said. "Enjoy the moment. It's going to be a memory you'll want to remember."

The fifth-grade grads sang the national anthem and gave a joint speech where students stepped up to the microphone to deliver the portion they had memorized.

Following this presentation, students reflected on their elementary school experience, each naming a skill they excel at and another they would like to improve upon in middle school.

“These children are very special to us," Ostrofsky said. "They worked really hard to have the most amazing ceremony today."
