Hochman, who has been Bedford Central's chief administrator since 2008, is scheduled to end his tenure on Nov. 6.
The deputy job is a position in Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration, the district noted.
The school board will appoint an interim superintendent to serve for the rest of the 2015-16 school year and will conduct a search for a permanent superintendent, the district added.
The board will select a search firm to assist with recruitment, the district added; the goal is to name a new superintendent next spring, with a starting date of July 1, 2016.
The district also detailed what Hochman's new role will entail.
"In his new role, Dr. Hochman will begin work immediately with the Governor’s recently appointed Common Core Task Force and with all constituencies regarding State education policy and budget development."
In a statement, Bedford Central School Board President Jennifer Gerken praised Hochman's appointment.
“It is a testament to his ability and experience as an educational leader that Dr. Hochman has been selected for this key position,” Gerken said. “While he will be greatly missed here in Bedford Central, we are excited that he will be working on behalf of all students and public schools statewide. It’s great to have a friend in Albany.”
State Assemblyman David Buchwald, whose assembly district includes the town's that are part of Bedford Central, praised Cuomo for selecting Hochman.
“Dr. Hochman is a true leader who exemplifies the best in caring for students and creating sound education policy," Buchwald said in a statement. "I heartily congratulate Dr. Hochman on his appointment to Deputy Secretary of Education for New York State. Governor Cuomo deserves to be commended for his selection.”
