Fox Lane HS Students Present 'Queen Lear' For Shakespeare Series

BEDFORD, N.Y. -- Celebrate a different twist on Shakespeare when Fox Lane High School students take the stage in Bedford for "Queen Lear."

Theater director Tom Slot and his Fox Lane Players will present the classic King Lear tragedy, but with Lear, Gloucester and other iconic roles recast as women instead of men.

The show takes place: 

  • Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m.

“I’m excited to play a role that a girl wouldn’t normally get to play and have the show be viewed from a different perspective,” said senior Devin Davis-Lorton, who plays Queen Lear.

Senior Emma Goodman, who has appeared in every play and musical over her four years at Fox Lane, added, “It’s incredibly exciting to work on this show. I couldn’t be more thankful to work with this talented cast and crew for my last play.”

Tickets are $5 for students; $15 for adults. There are no advance sales. Tickets for all are shows available at the door and start one hour before showtime. The house opens 30 minutes prior to showtime.

  • Oswald: Paul Paredes
  • Messenger: Jamie Parisi
  • Gentleman: Chanelle Holmes

The show is part of the high school's commemoration of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death on April 23, 1616 at the age of 52. Aside from "Queen Lear," the school held a Shakespeare-themed Haunted House. There are also two upcoming shows: "Dream 70: A Midsummer Night’s Dream Musical" and "Scenes From Shakespeare," a student directed production of scenes from "Henry V," "Romeo and Juliet," "Hamlet," "Macbeth," and others.
