The performing arts department's theater troupe for teens will entertain elementary school students from Westchester and Putnam counties with this all-ages show at 1 p.m. at the Lasdon Theater in the Walker Center for the Arts on the co-ed private school's Katonah campus.
“We think the idea of young people watching live theater performed by local high school students is an effective way to promote the spirit of the arts and arts education,” said Vinny Alexander, Harvey’s performing arts chair and production director.
The one-hour show will be performed at the Walker Center, which is a 22,000-square-foot space for music, theater, dance, video production and the fine arts.
“Historically, the arts were used as a way to teach and strengthen communities," Alexander said. "That is the goal of this new teen program," which began as an offshoot of the school’s summer camp.
Alexander said the show itself offers lessons about friendship and acceptance, as Pooh interacts with friends including the boy Christopher Robin, miserable donkey Eeyore and the adorably anxious Piglet.
This dramatization by Kristin Sergel includes two classic Winnie the Pooh adventures that will be familiar to fans: Kanga, the maternal kangaroo, comes to the Hundred-Acre Wood for the first time, and "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree," in which Pooh overindulges in a meal of honey and sweets and gets stuck in Rabbit’s front door.
Harvey School student Olivia Bady of Katonah plays Rabbit. “It’s fun being able to do a children’s production and performing in front of an enthusiastic, young audience,” she said.
Fifteen teen students from The Harvey School and neighboring high schools and school districts came together every Saturday morning to rehearse for this production.
Harvey's performing arts department is asking theatergoers to make a donation of $5 at the door to help defray production costs. For more information, call 914-232-3161, ext. 161, or visit The Harvey School's website.
