For three years Michael Solomon has pursued a simple strategy: save money at any cost. As head of the BCSD Finance Committee and based upon his own flawed analysis, he underfunded the healthcare plan. He spent district reserve funds to cover last year’s budget gap which he exacerbated by spending under the NYS Tax Cap. It sounded great when we all voted for a budget under the cap, but we didn’t know this was a high risk plan predicated upon falling costs--while all forecasts showed costs would rise.

As we see in the recorded board meetings, Michael Solomon is adversarial and argumentative. He ignores protocol and the rule of law. He does not build relationships or consensus. By running as a ticket with Harney and Brooks, he’s looking for followers to oppose the board, not partners.

His results are clear: the district faces the largest funding gap in its history. By defunding the reserve, BCSD’s credit rating has fallen and borrowing costs have risen. Because of Michael Solomon’s “leadership" we need to approve this budget with a 60% super majority or face a devastating contingency budget where class sizes will increase and many programs will be cut, including athletics and music.

Strong leaders set strategy and deliver results through their relationships and influence. Michael Solomon has spent three years damaging our school district and demonstrating that he is not a leader.

On May 17 we need to fix our school system by voting yes for the budget and no for Michael Solomon.
