NYC Schools Chief To Speak At Manhattanville Graduation

PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Carmen Farina, chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, the largest school district in the United States, will be the commencement speaker at Manhattanville College’s Graduate School ceremony at 7 p.m., Thursday, at the college campus in Purchase.

Farina has worked in virtually every capacity in education, from teacher and principal to district superintendent and deputy chancellor. Among her numerous accomplishments as chancellor since January 2014, she has overseen the historic expansion of pre-kindergarten to more than 53,000 4-year-olds. She supports rigorous Common Core-based standards to raise student achievement.

Farina holds three master’s degrees, from Brooklyn College (bilingual education), Fordham University (gifted/arts education) and Pace University (administration and supervision). She is a native of Brooklyn, the daughter of Spanish immigrants and the first person in her family to graduate from college.
