Brian Dervin, of Archbishop Stepinac High School, White Plains, and Hanna Cleary, School of the Holy Child, Rye, ran as co-candidates to raise the most money during a spirited seven-week competition to support LLS’s mission to find cures for blood cancers and ensure that patients have access to life-saving treatments.

Brian and Hannah were honored at the Students of the Year Grand Finale on March 8, at Chelsea Piers in Stamford, Conn.

The two were among eight local high school candidate teams who competed in the 2018 Students of the Year campaign. The teams competed in honor of local blood cancer survivors. Candidates and their campaign teams were honored with awards for their impact on community service, volunteerism, leadership and dedication to the LLS mission. The top fundraising candidates during the campaign are awarded the title Students of the Year, with each dollar raised counting as one vote.

Brian and Hannah, along with their team members raised over $35,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In all, the eight teams raised $125,000 for LLS.

Brian was inspired and chose to participate as a Students of the Year candidate by watching a close family friend, Mrs. June Burke, fundraise for LLS in memory of her sister Susan who recently lost her battle with blood cancer.

Brian said, "I love reaching out to my community to find new ways to help others."

Hannah was inspired to participate as a Students of the Year candidate in memory of her grandmother, who passed away 20 years ago this spring from Leukemia.

Hannah said, "I want to do something to keep my grandmother's spirit alive. I know she would want me to participate in something of this nature. She was a very generous person and I hope to make her proud through this campaign."
