BEDFORD, N.Y. -- Brewster pushed Fox Lane beyond the allotted time the Foxes would have liked.
Brewster forced overtime with a last-minute goal, but Fox Lane was not going to be denied, especially on its home field. Kailey OHagan scored a goal in each of the three-minute overtime periods, lifting top-seeded Fox Lane to an 11-9 win over third-seeded Brewster in the Section 1 Class B Girls Lacrosse Championship game Thursday.
The Foxes, who won their second sectional title in the past three years, advance to a regional semifinal against Section 9 victor, Saugerties at a date, time and site to be determined. Fox Lane also avenged a 7-6 regular-season loss to Brewster.
Sammy Jo Tracy led the Foxes with seven goals, including Fox Lanes four in the second half. The University of North Carolina-bound Tracy did this despite being shadowed all over the field and also being double-teamed when she had the ball.
It was do or die, OHagan said. This was going to be the most important six minutes of our season so we wanted to make it good.
Brewster sent the game to the extra sessions on a Megan Yarusso goal with 56 seconds remaining in regulation. Yarussos goal came after Tracy had given the Foxes an 8-7 lead with 3:17 on the clock. Tracy scored the first three goals of the second half, in a 92-second span, only to have Brewster match it with three goals to even the score at 7-7.
In the first overtime, Tracy and Elizabeth Lleshaj exchanged goals, but it was OHagan and Sydney Stern who collaborated on the decisive score with 13 seconds on the clock. Stern, operating behind the net, connected with a cutting OHagan. She caught the pass and, without hesitation, whipped a shot in.
Sydney and I made eye contact, OHagan said. I knew I would beat my girl, she fed me and it all worked out.
Tracy and her teammates were receiving congratulations from parents and classmates following the game, including Matt Pasqualini and Giancarlo Morreale, two senior standouts on the 2012 Section 1-winning Fox Lane wrestling team.
It feels unreal, Tracy said. Its a different team, but the excitement level is still there.
Tracy said Fox Lane did not make any adjustments off of the regular-season loss to Brewster. The Foxes were without a couple of players and still had not come together as a team.
Our season helped us and we felt we were well-prepared coming into the game, Tracy said.
