Rodrigues opened the tournament, Friday with a win and continued that theme through his final match Saturday. Rodrigues finished with a 6-0 record, including three pins, and received the Most Outstanding Freshman Wrestler award.
Teammate Tommy Grippi, who was 6-0, was chosen as the Most Outstanding Senior Wrestler. Overall, Fox Lane went 5-1, losing to Monroe-Woodbury in the title match.
“I was excited to start the season off,” said Rodrigues, in his second varsity season. “I started off slow Friday and was down in my first match after he took me down. After that, I reversed him and was able to control the match.”
Rodrigues was referring to his victory over Harrison senior Joe Maida.
“After I got that first win, it made me feel more confident,” Rodrigues said. “I felt I wrestled tough, especially coming back to win in my first match, and I wrestled smart.”
Rodrigues helped Fox Lane complete pool wrestling with a 5-0 record as the Foxes defeated Harrison, 41-28, Eastchester, 63-21, Edgemont, 39-38 on a tiebreaker, Croton, 69-17 and New Rochelle, 63-19. Frank Surace and Ben Ettlinger also went 6-0 for the Foxes. Seventh-grader Matt Grippi made his varsity debut, finishing 5-1, and Nick Cerrutti also went 5-1.
