Harvey Hockey Team Wins First Holiday Tourney Game

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The Harvey School’s hockey team notched its first win of the season Friday with a 5-1 victory over Archbishop Stepinac on the first day of a three-day holiday tournament in White Plains.

Leading the Cavaliers was junior forward Connor Wilson with two goals and two assists. Wilson was selected “Player of the Game.” Junior Keith Lambert chipped in with a goal and three assists while senior Robert Van Raamsdonk and sophomore Theo Rattner each picked up one goal. Rattner added an assist. Harvey’s junior goalie Mark Siegel made 22 saves.

Harvey coach Tim Halewicz liked what he saw from his veterans but he also made a point to recognize the contributions of freshman defenseman Alex Appel.

“Alex played great in his first varsity game on the blue line,” Halewicz said.

Halewicz knew going into his team’s first taste of competition that it would not be easy.

“Stepinac was a big, disciplined team, but we used our speed and puck movement to jump out to a lead," he said. "We were able to keep our tempo up for the first two periods, building a 5-0 lead.”

Overall, Halewicz was happy with the team’s performance.

“We implemented a lot of what we have been working on in practice; we back checked hard," he said. "There are still some things to tighten up though.”

In Friday’s other games, White Plains shut out a team comprised of players from Sleepy Hollow, Irvington and Dobbs Ferry, 9-0. Monroe-Woodbury got by Eastchester/Tuckahoe/ Bronxville, 3-2, and Horace Greeley skated past Clarkston, 8-5.

The 2013 White Plains Thanksgiving Tournament at Ebersole Ice Hockey Rink resumes Saturday, Nov. 30 at 8 a.m. with Greeley taking on Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville. Monroe-Woodbury faces Clarkstown at 4 p.m. White Plains skates against Stepinac at 6 p.m. and Harvey closes out the action Saturday with a game at 8 p.m. against Sleepy Hollow/Irvington/Dobbs Ferry.
