Mrs. Green's Natural Market Treats Mount Kisco

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. — Mrs. Green’s Natural Market was free-sample heaven.

The store declared Saturday Customer Appreciation Day, doubling as an early Earth Day celebration as well.

Store chef Chip Marks, who has been in the health food industry for 25 years, said that all of Mrs. Green’s products are 100 percent organic. “That’s really what our customers appreciate,” he said.

Along with loads of free samples throughout the store, the event featured product vendors for larger companies such as Pirate’s Booty and Zico coconut water, as well as health information tables and health food-related giveaways.

Wellness practitioners were also present, including Dr. Steven Goodstein, a chiropractor who works out of Mount Kisco; colon hydrotherapy expert Dawn Wan of the Sun & Moon Health Spa in Somers; and holistic health counselor Pat Min Cohen.

Cohen gave customers a tour of the natural market, which is at 666 Lexington Ave. and is one of 12 locations throughout New York and Connecticut. Cohen's business, Nutritional Spirit, is based in Mount Kisco.

"I helped customers choose the highest-quality foods," she said. During the tour, Cohen fielded a barrage of questions about the store’s stock, such as which were the best brands, what was made locally and what the labels meant.

Sally Daner, representing Navitas Naturals, gave out samples of “superfoods” like dried goji berries, mulberries and raw carob, so named because they have an intensely concentrated amount of vitamins and minerals. Superfoods, she said, pack such a nutritional punch that eating them is a lot like taking vitamins.

Julie E. Glick was another company owner hawking her wares at the store. Glick is the creator of ChocAlive! chocolate truffles, which are raw, vegan, gluten-free and made without refined sugars.

Glick said she came up with the idea to create a healthier chocolate that was still delicious when she was suffering from an illness. The product is uncooked, thus keeping in the vital enzymes and nutrients the body needs, she said.

“You’re not what you eat; you’re what you absorb,” she said.
