MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. – After spending 15 years climbing the Wall Street ladder, Somers resident and Ireland native Vincent McMahon decided he was ready to trade in his long commute for more time with his wife and kids, along with a new professional challenge.

McMahon found a way to accomplish both when he opened up the first Firstlight HomeCare in New York State last fall.

The company, which aims to create a new standard in non-medical, in-home care customized for seniors, new mothers and adults with disabilities, has found a new home in downtown Mount Kisco.

“When I decided to start a business in Westchester County, the first thing I did was figure out what there was a need for,” said McMahon.

“Our first months here have indicated the need for this type of service in Westchester County certainly exists. We look forward to becoming a valuable resource for the community, providing them with high quality, non-medical care.”

While there are similar services in the area, FirstLight Homecare separates itself through its caregiver selection process and flexibility, McMahon said.

“Our competitors focus in rural areas for only large chunks of service time,” he said. “We’ll go out for as little as two to three hours if that’s what our clients need.”

McMahon said FirstLight caregivers are matched up through a process in which their own personality is matched up with the personalities of potential clients.

“We make it a point for them to visit with the clients themselves before deciding if it’s a good fit,” he said. “If we have a client who is big into sports, we’ll do our best to provide them with a caregiver who is also into sports. Little things like that can make a big difference.”

Although northern Westchester is their primary service area at the moment, McMahon noted he already has clients in southern Westchester and plans to expand in the next one to two years with two additional offices to provide full service coverage to all areas in the County.

McMahon added that while his business is fully approved for “companion & homemaking services,” it's waiting on a pending approval for full “personal care,” which includes service in areas of bathing, personal hygiene, transfer, posture assistance and oral hygiene.

Currently, his caregivers focus on conversation and companionship, dementia care, meal preparations, medication reminders, transportation assistance, errands and overall homemaking tasks.
