Despite facing challenges of more than 3,000 downed primary wires and 500 blocked roads, Con Ed reports the “vast majority” of customers should have power by next weekend. Con Ed has restored power to an estimated 55,000 customers out of the almost 201,000 customers affected by Hurricane Sandy in Westchester, according to a press release Thursday night.

More than 139,000 customers out of 348,198 total customers served by Con Ed in Westchester are out of power as of Friday morning, down from more than 165,000 Thursday morning. The previous record number of storm outages in Con Edison territory occurred in 2011, when Hurricane Irene caused about 203,000 customers to lose service, according to the release.

Authorities are asking customers to report outages and downed wires to Con Edison and not through local emergency service lines. Customers can call 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, customers are asked to have their Con Edison account numbers available and report whether their neighbors also have lost power.

Customers who report outages will be called by Con Edison with their estimated restoration times as they become available, according to a press release. ??
