All hands were on deck Monday morning on Main Street in Ossining, as crews worked quickly to clean up a massive oil spill in the area that forced a lengthy road closure.

Main Street remains closed between South Highland Avenue and State Street due to a large truck that leaked gallons of oil in the roadway. Police said that the leaking fluid is believed to be waste oil that was set to be recycled.

Members of the Ossining Police Department, DPW crews and the Fire Department responded to the scene early on Monday morning.

Crews worked to cover catch basins and spreading sand to absorb the oil before it could impact drinking water.

Officials said that the private contractor that hired the trucking company was en route officially clean up the area professionally.

Main Street is expected to be closed, “for most of the day,” and officials encouraged motorists to avoid the area if at all possible to avoid spreading or tracking the spill. It was not immediately clear who would pay for cleanup efforts, but officials said it would not impact taxpayers.
