Hurricane Sandy hit the area Monday, Oct. 29, and by Tuesday afternoon, the storm had knocked out power for almost half of all customers in Mount Kisco. Much of the East Coast was hit with a devastating one-two punch when the hurricane, which felled power lines and trees, damaged homes and blocked roads, was followed up Nov. 7 with a powerful nor'easter.
An estimated 2,263 out of 5,075 Consolidated Ed customers in Mount Kisco were still without power from Hurricane Sandy at 4 p.m. Oct. 30, according to Con Edison reports.
Con Edison's power restoration efforts in the village continued after the nor'easter, and although efforts were somewhat hampered by the snowstorm, all streets in the village were restored to power as of Nov. 8, according to village officials.
Elementary school students in the Bedford Central School District missed a week of school due to Hurricane Sandy, while Fox Lane High School and Middle School resumed classes after a week and two days.
Mount Kisco's main job right after the storm was to clear the roads made impassable by the storm, but the Department of Public Works' cleanup continues, which involves carting off all the debris churned up during the storm.
Officials said the village is to receive future reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
