Village Trustee Reflects on Recent Trip To China

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y.,-- As an elected member of the Village Board of Trustees, Joseph Morreale thinks that it is important for the public to know where and what he’s been doing, which is why at the town board meeting last week he recounted his recent trip to China.

Morreale, who was in China for four weeks teaching at the University of Shanghai, saw many similarities between the developing country and Westchester and hopes to take what insight he gained there and use it to better Mt. Kisco.

“I came away with positive views of the country, but I have some concerns,” Morreale said.

Morreale said that the China he saw was not one where everyone road bicycles and rickshaws, but a country headed towards modernization and constant improvement.

“It looked like Westchester,” he said.

While there are many similarities between the United States and China that Morreale saw, there are still many differences including the way the government interacts with its people.

“You never appreciate it enough until you leave it,” Morreale said. “We as the Board need to keep the same quality of life” for the residents of Mt. Kisco.

Morreale’s trip also allowed him to look more closely at the United States which he said is “trying very hard to shake itself out of a great recession.” Because China buys many of the United States’ bonds, the two countries are in many ways connected.

“They’re waiting for us to pull ourselves up by our boot straps,” Morreale said of China.

Morreale was able to keep up with issues concerning the Village of Mt. Kisco while he was away by e-mailing with of Board members and visiting the Village’s website .
