A driver with an “altered mental status” drove away from the scene of an accident after crashing into a stop sign in Northern Westchester, police said.

Officers from the North Castle Police Department received a report shortly before 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, of a driver who went off the road and struck a stop sign on Meadow Hill Place in Armonk.

Police said that the caller assisted the operator, who “appeared to have an altered mental state,” before going back in her van and driving away. According to police, the woman was driving a black Toyota van that she continued to drive erratically after crashing. The caller then followed the vehicle to Pheasant Drive, where she met with police.

The incident is under investigation.
