Retaining Wall Collapses, Tumbles Into Roadway In Ossining

Main Street in Ossining is still closed to traffic following the collapse of a 40- to 50-foot-tall retaining wall that tumbled into the roadway, bringing part of a business along with it.

The incident took place around 7:30 p.m. Monday at 100 Main St., near the heart of downtown Ossining, said the Ossining Police Department.

No one was injured during the collapse of the wall located at the split between Main Street, Secor Road, and Hunter Street, police said.

Officials are waiting for an engineer's report to find out what caused the wall to collapse and if any surrounding properties are compromised.

Several residents were displaced overnight as they waited for safety reports. An update on the number is expected Tuesday.

Ossining Police Chief Kevin Sylvester said on Facebook Tuesday that Main Street remains closed from State Street to Secor Road.

The department is asking commuters and residents to use Central Avenue from Main Street, Snowden Avenue from the north end, or Brandreth to Broadway to get to the Ossining train station.

The collapse was the second major incident on Main Street Monday. Earlier in the day, the street was closed for several hours due to a massive fuel leak from a truck.
