The first attempt occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the Boiling Springs Bank on Rock Road, where the man initially spoke of  needing money before getting spooked and leaving, police said.

He was described as black, about 6-foot-2 and barely 200 pounds, wearing a white untucked dress shirt with epaulettes and a badge holder, dark pants and a baseball cap — possibly with a Chicago White Sox emblem.

The bank manager hit the silent alarm as he fled on Maple Avenue toward the Glen Rock Inn.

The other incident occurred at the Columbia Bank on River Road in Fair Lawn a short time later. A weapon wasn’t shown but was “implied,” police said, adding that he passed a note.

The robber then “became nervous and ran from the bank without obtaining money, running across River Road to a black midsize SUV with a black female driver,” Fair Lawn Police Sgt. Brian Metzler said. “The vehicle fled south on River Road.”
