BEDFORD, N.Y. Fox Lane coach Chris Violante has been to the Westchester County Center twice as an assistant at Dover High School.
On Friday afternoon, he will lead Fox Lane in his first trip there as a head coach and he thinks that his experience from Dover will help him prepare for the matchup against Mahopac.
When its your team, its a little different, but I got a great staff, Violante said. Well prepare and well be ready. Whatever happens in that 32 minutes, happens.
The No. 2 Foxes will face the No. 3 Indians at 5 p.m. Friday in the Class AA semifinals. Will Trawick will try to lead Fox Lane to its first Class AA championship since 2004.
After Fox Lanes quarterfinal win against North Rockland, Trawick said he is looking forward to playing on the Westchester County Center floor.
Its a dream come true, Trawick said. We played there when I was in sixth-grade with a rec team and we were so small and it was so big.
Now, its like, we used to watch the 2004 team, they made it to the championship, said Trawick as he gestured to the sign above the bleachers that displays the Foxes 2004 Class AA championship. And were like, Wow, we want to be those guys. And were finally those guys.
Trawick said the team set two goals at the beginning of the season: to win a league championship and to make it to the county center. The Foxes accomplished both feats, but they hope they are not done yet.
We basically achieved our goals and now were going to set new goals and try and win and try and get as far as we can, Trawick said.
After the victory against North Rockland, Violante said he had not looked ahead to the opponents his team might face at the county center. But with the top-seeded Knights as a possible finals matchup, Violante did not mince words.
Lets not kid around. Youve got Mount Vernon ahead of you, Violante said. Mount Vernon is Mount Vernon. Hopefully we can get an opportunity to play them. He added, Were there. Wed love to have the gold ball and hang it like we got nine years ago but well take one game at a time.
