Westchester Special Olympians Take Home Medals

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – North East Westchester Special Recreation sent several athletes to the Special Olympics New York in Buffalo last weekend, and those competitors came home with plenty of hardware.

The basketball team, which held its final practice before the games last Thursday at Leonard Park in Mt. Kisco, won its three-team division and captured a gold medal, according to North East Westchester Special Recreation Program Director Nancy Bellini. There were 28 basketball teams in total at the Special Olympics.

Each of the seven area track and field athletes at the event came home with medals. Both swimmers there also medaled, including one who earned three gold medals. Typically, each swimmer competes against five others in a given event, according to Bellini.
